[sdiy] FM bass - most popular algorithm

I'm currently doing some research for building a mono bass synthesizer. It would be an FM synth, using AVR-microcontrollers.

I was thinking I could simplify the user interface somewhat compared to a Yamaha DX7. First thing would be to remove any unnecessary algorithms.

So, my question to you is as follows: Which is your favourite (DX7) FM algorithm for (growly) bass?

I examined some bass patches residing in the public domain. The most popular algo seems to be 17, followed by 16 and 18. (A DX7 algorithm chart can be found here:
