Agreed.  There's such a variation in what people have, that there is no comparing.

A while back, there were a couple of challenges that were more "fair", such as a whole
synth made out of 4069UB as active parts, or a whole synth made out of LM3900 as the only
active parts or a whole synth built of nothing but 2N3904 transistors.

To my knowledge, the only one of those that is close to ever being completed is the
4069UB one.  Osamu Hoshuyama made an excellent attempt, he even put together CMOS OTAs.
