Laurie,
You have a point, but we choose our DIY battles. For instance, you don't see much discussion about, say, building MIDI fader boxes from scratch, because they are so cheap to buy. Besides, this is Synth DIY, not Mixer DIY, but I hope this is close enough to "on topic" for everyone's tolerance.

And I'm sure that you can build a quality unit. One question I have is why you want VC instead of MIDI control, but hey -- it's your system.

As far as I know, VC means using a VCA or Vactrol or OTA for each function for which you need VC. With 4 bands of EQ plus volume per channel, that sounds like a lot of circuitry. But, since each band of EQ requires an op amp (right?) I guess that substituting a VCA isn't a big deal. By the way, all those high quality VCAs won't be real cheap...

Phantom powered submixers?
---------------------------------------------
Regarding cabling, how about using balanced lines to link your submixers to the main mixer (a good idea for noise, anyway), and running phantom power over those lines to power the submixers. Given the right power supply (and cablings of sufficient gauge to carry enough current), I think this would work.

So, ATTENTION DIY PEOPLE! Let's stop talking Elby out of doing it herself, and weigh in with your suggestions. :-)

Thanks everyone who has responded so far.
Seems to be a general thrust towards buying a ready-built unit which is a bit odd for a DIY site!!!!.
Anyway I am not convinced that I can't build a decent unit (which would at least be 100% what I want and not a compromise or contain additional unwanted/unused features) so will continue searching for a VCE (Voltage Controlled Equaliser) and working on my VCA and VCPA (Voltage Controlled Pre Amplifier)

  Best Regards
