Thanks everyone who has responded so far.
Seems to be a general thrust towards buying a ready-built unit which is a bit odd for a DIY site!!!!.
Anyway I am not convinced that I can't build a decent unit (which would at least be 100% what I want and not a compromise or contain additional unwanted/unused features) so will continue searching for a VCE (Voltage Controlled Equaliser) and working on my VCA and VCPA (Voltage Controlled Pre Amplifier)
