Heck, I am all in favor of a DIY mixer...(sort of one of those things I am 
doing way in the background for several years)....

For the voltage control element, I would recomend the THAT part ( 
http://www.thatcorp.com ) which seems to be the one that ends up in the 
high end mixing consoles.

I also did some experiments with differential preamp circuits....
