The disadvantage is the (possibly) limited resolution if you want to be 
able to apply voltage control to such a processor controlled oscillator.
Also you need a pretty good DA to control a linear oscillator precisely.

Have a look at the Korg Polysix. One expo convertor is muxed to several 
linear VCOs.
