Curtis chips can be fun. Analog Devices still sells VCA ics, which can
be used in VCOs and VCFs. Curtis 3374 dual VCOs can be found for cheep.
It is easier to build a cheep bank of decent VCOs now than it has ever
been. Even more universal than Curtis, there have been so many great
designs over the past few years using 13600 OTAs or 3049 transistor
arrays. Tom Gamble I recall was designing all-transistor VCOs with full
range, good scaling and stability. All of the parts were cheep, most
expense would be panel hardware.
I find that the biggest issue is hardware... finding a cheep
rack-mounted chassis to install some modules in. Getting a cheep
quantity of the values of pots you need. The 'fabrication solutions'
are what get me.
