[sdiy] switching power supply

How do switching power supplies work? I have a Roland S-330 with a 
broken power supply and I can't find one small enough to fit in the 
case. I'd like to fix it if possible. I am sure it's the supply since I 
got the sampler to power from an external linear supply. Maybe someone 
has a +15, -15, +5 switching supply that's less than an inch and a half 
tall that they wanna give away... (since the sampler is worthless anyway!)
