[sdiy] Just a newbie question

Where can I go to learn how a synth works... how to build my own... etc.. Is there a site where I can get a good background on the whole thing? I am new to the list, and am currently working on a few projects, but I have very little knowledge of synthesizers. Anything is appreciated thank you.
