[sdiy] Just a newbie question

As far as learning how a synth works, I suggest starting with a kit...the 
Paia Fatman ( http://www.paia.com ) is very low cost and is a good basic synth.

There are literally hundreds of sites on the internet dealing with building 
synths, and if you are in Southern California, or you just like to drive, 
see the link below for the PSW Synth DIY meet, which happens to be this 
coming Saturday.
