I've done this before and it should work fine. Preferrably one would measure 
the power supply of the cassette deck feeding the pcb before it has been 
removed, in order to set the supply voltage correctly, but 9V should be OK. 
Checking the LED current will make sure that you are where you should be. Then 
just buffer the input signals for the display levels that you want.
