Thanks everyone for your input; I may try Bojan's idea just for fun, but I
had already tried discharging through a wire (when pretty dead). I don't
know that I hold out a lot of hope for charging/discharging through resistor
etc.

I went to Zellers and paid too much for a newer model battery (but 4$ less
than Ratshack wanted; it's for a wireless phone), then soldered the
connector on from the old one (different connector/package size than
anything on the market, lucky me, eh?). Since the new battery was much
bigger (and 30ma beefier...the original battery was way too small for a
3.6V), I dremel'd the inside of the battery compartment out and stuck that
big fella in. Wife is happy.

There is only one tip I can't do without on a Dremel tool; the long,
rounded, tapers-to-a-point grinder. I do *everything* with that; those silly
cutting discs just shatter.
