Yes, now that Glen mentions it, the diode's probably the first thing to 
replace, if only because it's the cheapest and easiest to find part.  Replace the 
diode and see what happens.  If that fixes it, great.  If not, move on the the 
RAM and the gate IC.

If you have a meter, you could pull up one side of the diode and put the 
meter in series with it (the other meter lead would connect to where you pulled up 
the diode).  With the synth's power turned OFF, take a current reading (put 
your meter in Amps mode).  Do this both before and after you replace the diode, 
and take notes.  If you get a significantly lower current reading with the 
new diode, then you probably fixed it -- and you won't have to wait six weeks to 
find out!
