Hmm, my argument would be that a 6V 600mA transformer isn't exactly an 
expensive item. I don't know about the prices in Japan, but here the 
cost is comparable to that of a decent tube socket. And a large cap 
rated for 100V~ (or 230V here) does cost almost the same. Those couple 
hundred yen are well invested.
