FM-able, synchable sample playback? (was: Re: [sdiy] Voltage-Controlled Sampler?)

This reminds me: in VAZ Modular I can apply
exponential FM to existing sound files up to a quite
large index (8 oct?) and gives hard synch on top of
that, and if I'm not mistaken, any flanger does expo
FM to the input, but the pitch drift can be a problem,
so:

Is there any synth, hard or soft, that allows *linear*
FM of an arbitrary soundfile (as opposed to small
wavetables of fixed proportions as in the Wiard and
other modules)? Or even of live input (a minimal delay
while it's written to a file wouldn't matter)?
