You don't seem to have schematics on your site, but from the sound of
the description this would be the perfect excuse to use a GAL or PLD
instead of whatever-series gates.

Huh? Fairchild, On, Philips, TI and ST are all still manufacturing
CD4000 series parts and most of it in SO packages as well. Farnell for
one have a pretty good selection on these...
BTW, I like your "everything has to be VC" stance on things very much.
