[sdiy] ot: lap top battery repelacement

I have a very old lap top computer, which serves well for electronic
music during holiday. 

The accumulator is -however- over it's life time, it can not be charged.
Now I wonder if I should open the cartrige and replace the individual
cells, or simply develop an external thing that can be plugged in  instead
of the PSU.

I'll guess I go for NiMh cells, does somebody know a charging circuit?
A a web page that deals with replacing worn out acuumulators?
