Au contraire... Ask around your favorite classical orchestra player how
bookings plunged with the introduction of the Nemesis GigaSampler. For
studio recordings there's no need anymore.

Besides, where is a drummer still really needed? I severely doubt that for
the average mass market crap an actual drum player is booked. They already
solved their task with playing in the takes for the latest sample CD.

Wasn't it always like that? Every new style was some sort of "indie stuff"
first bevor $BIG_LABEL took it under contract.

Right you are :)

And what market share do they have? How often are they played on mass
media and come to the attention of the average listener? The last time I
was in Germany, it didn't really matter which radio station I tuned in.
The "rock/pop" stations (as opposed to Classical Music and Volksmusik
stations) all played the same kind of ready-made mix.

Not sure, though, how this reflects radio stations in other European
countries.

In the US I at least have a chance to flee the mainstream by selecting
some niche channel -- assuming, that one of the preferred kind exists in
the area I'm currently in.

You don't believe it. I don't believe it. We all on this list probably
don't believe it.

But obviously someone does believe it, otherwise no law like DMCA or its
European counterpart ("sure, you might still copy that stuff for your own
use -- but fighting the copy protection now is illegal") would have been
made.
