What about clear acrylic balls? I think the clear version of the Gleeman
Pentaphonic used these for knobs. You could mount these in a similar way to
what you describe above, and light them from underneath. I'm not sure if
frosted, translucent, or transparent balls would look best, but no matter
which you choose, it should look pretty futuristic. Combine this with your
backlit mod-wheel idea, and you should have a pretty wild looking synth
panel. You might even consider using the mod-wheel control in place of any
slide pots that would have otherwise been in the design. 

I would probably use either brushed aluminum, anodized aluminum, or chrome
for the panel surface, if I were going this far.

I know, some people will say this is too wild, but wasn't that the goal?   :)
