You don't need to do it through the shaft. A clear (or translucent) 
knob can have it's body go below the panel level (pot attached to a sub 
panel) and the light source can side light the pot body. The light will 
bounce around inside the knob body and appear to light completely up. 
You can use tricolor leds and have the color change for the different 
levels (blue through red would be cool). I've done plexiglas sculpture 
in the past and have side lit many a piece and it looks great. I once 
toyed with the idea of mounting pots side ways, like the typical mode 
wheel, with a clear plexiglas wheel. I was going to use a white lamp 
and have the back edge of the wheel painted (that fake stain glass 
paint) so the wheel would change colors with the position. With 
encoders and a tricolor led aimed at the edge, this would look great. 
Think of how a bank of them would look.
