If your friend has the chops to build something beyond the beginner level...
the EFM "Bassace" might be good... its a single oscillator monosynth with
a ladder filter.  Google search for "Electronics for Music" and you will find
the
site.

This has a midi to cv converter... I'd bypass that and add a keyboard (CV)
interface instead. EFM has one of those also
