[sdiy] VCO vote?

Read this with some humor, but the background is really serious.

Every now and then some people tell us that this or the other
VCO sounds so much better then some other VCO.

I have no clue about that and thus want to learn more.

Did you listen to the VCO alone?
That would mean that you have to tap the VCO circuit.

Is there something special with the wave form?
That would mean to tap a scope in it (or sample it).

Is there some frequency oddity (jitter, phase noise, any way you
would like to name it.) That would mean to sample the output
and do some analysis on the timing (e.g. short time DFT, or
time domain period statistics).

Has such analysis been done?
If not, could people with "interesting" VCO come up with a good
sample (aka digital recording, DAT, no crap soundcard, please),
16-bit 44100 or 48000, say 60 sec long of a low note ~100 Hz and a
mid range note? (1kHz)?

Or is the "interesting" property such that it will get lost
during digital recording?

This mail is not intended to annoy people, but to learn more.

of all the oscillators i have available, the one i like the best is the one
in the roland sh-09. that thing sounds just right. fat, sharp, musical.. the
saw cuts like a razor blade, the pulse with a little pwm easily outdoes a 4
oscillator mono poly. i know it's not very eccentric, but to me that's a
beauty. and discrete too, if i'm not mistaken.

the 'weirdest' one would be eric's metasonix tm-3. but boy, what a sound.. i
love the way you can make the oscillators beat together. but building tube
vco's is not for the fainthearted..;-)
