If the old battery was NiCad, that's the only type of battery that can be
used without modification.  In 10 years you'll need to worry about leakage
again (and after fixing a few Polysixes, trust me, you don't want to have
it leak)

To modify the circuit is usually pretty simple... you just need to disable
the charging circuit.  In the case of the polysix, it only requires
replacing 2 or 3 components.... simple.  Then you can use any type of
battery (with correct voltage)  I used a Lithium coin-cell.  This is
definitely the best method!!!

If you can scan the schematics around the battery area, someone should be
able to give you some advice.
