Users want (or developers think users want) to fit many plugins to the
screen at the same time. This is probably just a question of
attitude/preference

This is a bit harder problem and related to the nature of mouse input.
If our control range is from, say, 0 to 100 and the size of the slider on
the screen is 100 pixels, then there's a nice one to one mapping. If the
slider is later changed to, say, 140 pixels the mapping changes AND you
can't get the exact same settings. If more accurate than one pixel mouse
input or precision adjustment was allowed then this wouldn't be a problem.
Or it could be that the developers are lazy and don't want to support
multiple size interfaces.
