I have to chuckle at the notion of The Idiot's Guide to Making Your Own
Wavetable Synthesizer.

I know some on this list have done it. You can find PC boards if not entire
kits (I'm not sure) to do wavetable synthesis. I'm sure some other folks
will provide some links.

But... Do you know the difference between a sampler and a wavetable synth?
When you mention "real" sounds, I get the impression that you want a
sampler. How long are your existing wavetables? (And, how many bits per
sample?) The wavetable voice boards I've seen only do 128- or 256-word
waves. Samplers can make recordings that are thousands of words long (many
seconds long).
