[sdiy] Hello - new subscriber looking for help/guidance/advice etc

Hello everybody,
I have recently subscribed to this list because I am seeking some 
information which may be available here or there may be someone on this 
list who can point me in the right direction.
My apologies if this is off-topic for this list.
I am building a midi instrument that currently plays through the midi input 
of my pc. What I would like to do is free the instrument from the pc and 
make it play "real" sounds. I have been trawling the internet for some time 
and believe the way to achieve this is by using "wavetable synthesis". 
Unfortunately I do not seem to be able to find any "simple" guide to making 
this work. So my question is - Can anyone point me at a source of 
information about implementing wavetable synthesis, circuits, etc. in a 
truly portable device.

Once again, my apologies if this is off-topic for this list but hopefully 
some kind person can help.
