Y-ellow Tim.
Probably someone has already mentioned this but I'm writing this
quickly in between outages as telstra are up to their old incompetent
tricks again.
May I suggest looking into using a PLL frequency synthesizer type
arrangement. The beauty of a PLL is that it kinda works like a VCO but
(Well yes I know it's a VCO) but can be xtal locked. So you have a
reference clock (The xtal) and any devisor down from them. Not just the
usual divide by 2 or 3. And of course, it's variable.
It's not quite like having your cake and eating it too but it's close and
for your app you could probably get away with one of those cheap-assed CMOS
PLLs. I've used these a few times myself and found them to be more than
adequate for audio.
Anyway. Hope that is some use to you. And hope I don't have to spend
another 5 days waiting for telstra feed some peanuts to their monkeys so I
can have my link back again.
Be absolutely Icebox.
