There are various interface boxes for MAME that let you wire joysticks and
buttons up to a PC keyboard scanner IC, or you can just hack a cheap PC
keyboard yourself.

www.mame.dk used to have all the ROMs for download, until a copyright owner
shut them down.
I've got 3+ GB of games spread across 5 CD-Rs, downloaded about a year ago -
the complete set for version 0.37 IIRC.
If anyone wants to hold an offsite backup for me, I may be able to arrange
it - I'd need 5 CD blanks, plus a postage paid return envelope. For
practical reasons, UK only... And you must own all the machines ;-)
I've got a Galaxian cocktail table, which I didn't realise had analogue fire
and hit effects (thanks whoever mentioned it).
I'm now tempted to fit trigger output jacks and insert points, so I can
patch in a synth... Oops, getting on-topic...
