I, personally, try to avoid using TTL devices because of
power consumption and noise back to the supply (TTL gains
speed by causing the output structure to switch in a way
that allows both the upper and lower totem pole transistors
to be on at the same time, causing a current spike at each
transition). If you can use CMOS, it is much kinder to the
supply. Certainly, logic run at audio frequencies can be
built easily from CMOS, as the devices can run into the low
megahertz range.
