[sdiy] arpeggiator?

anyone know of any schematics or techniques for building an analog
arpeggiator?  I've never gotten a look at one but I'm imagining it operates
pre-vco not post, in other words like a sequencer delivering DC pulses to
drive the arpeggio.  My fantasy is to build something to recreate the effect
post-vco, so that it could be used for other sources besides VCO's.  I'm
imagining an analog harmonizer with a CMOS switch matrix driven by a
sequencer, maybe there's something simpler?  Just thought I'd throw it out
there and see if anyone's run into this kind of thing.
