If you find it difficult debugging the avr's you should get a jtag ice, 
ice50, or ice200 depending on what chips you need "in circuit debugging" for.

Used the ice200 a bit, and it's great when all seems to be ok in avr 
studio, but something is weird as soon as the code is in the chip 
instead.... Going to make some board with a avr and dsp soon... going to be 
fun ;) (or maybe hell... hehe)
