If you take a fine chisel and gently remove the top of the uC, you may just be able to see the electrons moving around, and be able to work out what's going wrong ;-)

More seriously .. 99% of my strange troubles with PICs has been to do with incorrect pages of Data or Progam memory switched in.  Also, with interupts make sure you save all the registers/RAM locations which you might be using in the main loop.  Not sure if any of this applies to an AVR, but I thought I'd mention it.

Another stupid problem I had while breadboarding was when I left leaving the reset pin floating .. that was really dumb.
