Heating the 3046 die is used in the later Moogs like the Prodigy and
Source. It is a good mechanism, but it does take a while to warm up and
suffers badly if your ambient temp rises above the heater temp.
The main hassle with them, other than the large current draw, is the
setting up. Its one or two extra trimmers to set up. The temp co method
is self setting in that respect... and therefore from the manufacturing
point of view cheaper.
