Check out http://www.xess.com  Look under tutorials.  This fellow wrote 
the book that used to be included with the Xilinx Student Edition.  He 
is now offering much of the same information for free as pdfs.  I have 
not bought anything from him (my 486 IBM is no better than a MAC for 
this stuff), but he seems to offer a very comprehensive set of materials 
for getting started -- even an 8051 manual for the 8031 chip on his
boards.
