Yeah, not recommended. The 4069 and 4007 are really
better for this kind of experimenting anyway. Also
4049 to some extent. You get more and better access
to individual transistor devices. I haven't tried it
yet, but I think some sort of analog ringmod could
be made from an 'unpowered' 4007 or 4069. I'm quite
fascinated with these devices lately, especially used
as linear devices instead of traditional logic. They're
cheap and plentiful enough that you can't feel too bad
if you "waste" a couple in an experiment gone horribly
wrong. And they're really not all that fragile if
you're fairly careful in your design. Eg, just think
about what might happen if you were to make the protection
diodes conduct. If you properly limit current with
resistors in the right places, it won't hurt it.
