Doesn't this really have to do with the linearizing diodes?

If I recall things correctly the 1496/1596 is a non-linearized
Gillbert multiplier core, where as the 1495/1595 is the same thing but
with the input diodes added. If you have these, you really should toss
the signal through a pair of voltage-to-current converters for optimal
operation.

I have National's LM1596/LM1496 datasheet (in PDF) but not for the
1495/1595 variants. For OTA freaks the 1496 internal wiring is
actually quite interesting, it's like an OTA input section on steriods
;O)
