CS-70M

2006-05-14 by Wayne Griffin

I was wondering if there are any other CS-70M users in
the group. I’ve heard little mention of the CS-70M
here; I know they are somewhat obscure. I have one but
due to an inscrutable power supply problem I have
never heard mine. Anyone else for CS-70?

I used to have one....It was the last analog synth (Digitally
controlled)Yamaha made I believe.....It was an attempt for a prophet
type memory system using CS80 type synthesis,,,What went wrong.....They
gained memory slots and lost expressiveness and control with cheaper
sounding analog synth.....It also predated midi so it lost to the
prophet,,,,,It still is good ,warm and has some unique features, but it
is no CS80.....

Hi used to have one too (but my father still has one, so i can use it
anytime ..)
i was lucky enough to play both alternately to compare, and no doubt
that it s really not as good sounding as the CS80
the vco don t have as much brightess, the chorus/ensemble is relly
cheezy (same as the one found on SK series), only one panel to program
sounds for both vco (have to push a button to change which one you
want to edit), keyboards in no way comparable to the one on the 80,
wheels instead of ribbon controller, and many more stuffs
but, BUT, to me, there are some very nice features i d like to find on
the 80, such as autotune (as anybody here, i guess, light weight
("only" 30 kg, or something like that), leds on each voice card, very
handy to service the synth, ring modulator separated for each vco to
me is a great feature, for exemple, you can have a very digital
sounding stuff on vco1 thanks to that ring mod, and play with a more
analog sounding sound with vco 2
but, even if i do say many bad things about that synth, i keep
thinking it s a very good one, even it has many silly limits (i
believe the same about the CS80 , even if it s probably my favorite
polysynth, but, small things such as vco sync, wider lfo depth, 2nd
lfo, and of course, autotune)
don t hesitate to ask me more about it if you want, i could if you re
patient record for you some sounds from the CS70
ah, one more thing, the CS70 is really a reliable synth to me
never had problems with mine, and neither my father with his
i got mine after it stayed for years in a house, unused, plugged it,
play, it was nearly tuned, and after few minutes (and an autotune), it
went perfect

Re: [yamahacs80] Re: CS-70M

What I do like is the memory from the entire panel is stored in each
oscillator bank and then arranged based on mix 1 parameters....this is
where multi timbral was born....instead of 1 memory for an overall
sound, you had 2 overall sounds mixed...
giving that 16 presets of 1 and 16 presets of II...for a total of 256
preset combinations....Strangely the Footage positions were also stored
except for panel which was the realtime knob location on the
panel.....you then could subdivide into splits (lower/upper=2/4 or
4/2)thus having 4 presets running (2 up 2 down)Although channel AT was
the touch control, there were 3 pedal switch inputs and 3 controller
pedal inputs.....My CS80 Control pedal worked perfectly in there and I
could attach it to the brilliance etc.....Another thing was Channel one
stored modulation features for oscillator bank 2 in whether control
affected both banks or not.......And then there was the preset booklet
of magnetic strips where you could offload your presets and call in new
ones.......

Re: CS-70M

I've got a CS70M. It's actually a rather cool and unique synth. The unison mode is very
thick. I've got some recordings where it sounds very much like an Oberheim 4 voice. It's
very creamy. I actually like the chorus effect when used on string sounds. Very retro but
different than the Solina. If there was one thing I wish it had it would be the poly
aftertouch like the 80. These are also very rare. It took me forever to find one.

Yes it is very thick in unison..... 12 oscillators thick....The reason I
first bought one was to use it as a hyper monosynth to replace my
destroyed Arp AXXE.....It was very fat if you didn't use the
aftertune, and if you used it with the mix 1 mix 2 outs, you didnt need a
chorus, just a hint of lfo on one channel would stir the bees up....

Re: [yamahacs80] CS-70M Group

2006-05-16 by Wayne Griffin

Should I establish a CS-70M group? Would there be
enough interest to justify a separate group or would
we most likely try to include that traffic in this
group? Are CS-70M discussions welcome here?

I am a moderately technical person but definitely not
an EE. I can contribute a scanned service manual and
binary files of the ROM's. Are there any gurus on this
list that would be willing to contribute support for
the CS-70M? There is very little in the manual about
theory of operation. I am sure that a midi interface
or a hack of the keycode would be one imminent topic.

I am not sure and the only thing I still have is my book of magnetos...

It's fine talking about them here, along with CS-50s, CS-60s, GX-1s, and
other, related instruments.
