The usage of String 1 and String 2 presets.

The usage of String 1 and String 2 presets.

2006-05-09 by Mert Topel

My CS-80 ownership just dates back to one month only. Although I am
immensely impressed by the CS-80's musicality, there is one point that
still remains quite unclear to me: The usage of the String 1 and String
2 presets...

I have found the other presets to be generally quite musical and
effective. But what about the String1 and String 2 ? How do you use
these two presets? I find them very bright and harsh to layer each
other in a dual strings patch or to layer any other sound that the CS-
80 produces.
Lessening the brightness does not even help much.

Ironically, this poor combination is the first sound you hear every
time you turn on any CS-80.

Do I miss anything about this sounds? Could Yamaha have wasted two
valuable memory locations by two awful string sounds on a synthesizer
that can actually produce breath taking string sounds?

Very often is the combination strings2-strings4 to be used, sometimes
strings2 is tuned1octave upper ;)

I like the sounds of these strings......They are not as brassy as the
old elka rhapsody strings.....they work really well when detuned and
with the chorus on and well with the wah circuit...very resonant.......

I don't generally use String 1 and String 2 together. I always end up
with a diagonal pattern, String 1 w/String 4, or most often for me,
String 3 w/String 2. And almost always with the Chorus on, and
aftertouch modulations of course. The string presets maybe aren't the
strongest patch in isolation, but tend to work better (maybe) with other
instruments playing.

I use String 3 and then refer to the manual to replicate String 3
with one of the Memory buttons or Panel II, so I have virtually
the same sound on both I and II, then I can detune Channel II
and get a little extra thickness going. I've done this with String 1
and 2, as well, but it doesn't sound as good.

Re: The usage of String 1 and String 2 presets.

2006-05-10 by jiliora

Hi
there is way to use strings 1&2 i like
i add the tremolo effect (max depth and low speed), put voice 1 on 8'
and voice 2 on 16', and remove few frequencies with the general cutoff
i like to use that sound to play low chords

You know...I remember reading up on Don Airy and the CS80.......Don Airy
used CS80 brass 1 & 2 on OZZY Osbournes "Mr Crowely" intro(Glissando
Sust 1) and I believe during the Song you hear Strings 1 and 2 with the
pitch ribbon doing downward slides after the "Waiting on Satans
Call"vocal line......I heard it on the radio today and thought I should
share that........
