Vangelis sounds

2006-04-06 by philodryasbr

hi,

I am new to this group and have checked the files bank looking for
some Vangelis like sounds but unfortunately could not find it here :(
I have tried to program some myself but I think the sounds used by
Vangelis was improved by some great reverb modules. Can anyone point me
to some patches for the CS80 that sounds like Vangelis Strings or Brass?
Thank you

You haven't a CS80, have you?
Because the CS80 has *its* sound it's not easy to get them with a whatever
else synthesizer, anyway a good analog can do some of the job of the CS80.
What synth can you manage?

Re: [yamahacs80] Re: Vangelis sounds

2006-04-06 by Max Fazio

Ehm, I feel partially responsible about it because I redesigned the panel
presets for the version 1.5 of the synth: on the original Vangelis uses
almost only the panel presets. I admit I made a mistake while designing the
BRASS1 preset because I didn't set the parameters well, the original preset
has a very soft filter sweep at low velocity and I made it too heavy, sorry
for that.
Some presets, especially those referring to plucked strings instruments have
a different type of velocity response, I'm still convinced of it until
anyone will refute my thesis, but I couldn't set those parameters well
because the V in single mode has plain cutoff responses, therefore some
preset suffer from this.
Apart from that the only advice I can give you is to carefully pay attention
to what you hear on the Vangelis music featuring CS80 and try to replicate
the sounds on the CS80V....anyway I for first can tell you there is still
nothing that can replace a CS80 at full.
About the reverbs you can find many of them with different quality, you must
basically try and test what you like, and maybe EQ the output of the reverb.
Cheerz!

Personally, I think the trademark Vangelis sound is more than just the
CS-80. The Lexicon 224 Reverberator has a lot to do with his
atmospheric sound.

I agree, a great effects unit is a passport that allows the instrument to transcend its sonic borders.
I've run the CS-80 through a digital delay chained to an Alesis Microverb. The result was 'transcendant'. It really accentuated the multi-timbral quality, what with Mix I and Mix II being set on different type sounds.

I have a Lexicon mpx500 but haven't used it yet with the CS. Other instruments' sounds when taken through the Lex have gone through a resurrection. Can't wait to try it.

OK, the 224 plays a role into the Vangelis sound, but I wish we all aren't
limited by just trying to reproduce something already exhistent in the real
world...otherwise we will end up all being just copycats, better do deal
with creativity! For example a friend of mine did a live gig with a CS60
sometimes "played" through a Space-Echo...well, guys it is terrific how
these two tools sound when they're together, the guy made some unearthly
sounds which buried all the Vangelis and krautrockers out there...Also
amazing is to use the CS with some external modulation efx, for example and
with a decent chorus you can have a MIX=0 CS80 out of a CS50 or 60, or like
Jobson did on the "Green" LP by using a phaser....go beyond!

Well, to use a term from NLP, the CS80 sound is firmly "anchored" with
Vangelis, full stop. You can do whatever you want, you will automatically
end up producing a sound reminiscent of Vangelis because he really used the
CS80 like no other. Very much like using a Mellotron and *not* sounding
quite like King Crimson, Moody Blues, Genesis, or Tangerine Dream. I would
never ever associate the CS80 with people like Stevie Wonder, Herbie
Hancock, Mike Oldfield, or Kate Bush because they never explored the sonic
potential of this instrument, to them it was just another polyphonic
synthesizer which happened to be more expressive than, say, a Prophet 5 or
Oberheim OB-X, let alone a Polymoog.

It´s one thing to use the sound, it´s another thing to play your own music
with it.

It doesn´t have to be a Lexicon 224XL, btw. Any decent digital reverb which
doesn´t produce a tinny type of sound but reasonably thick reverb washes can
be used for that. EMT 246 works great, so does a Klark Teknik DN 780, and
there are plenty of lower-market devices that also sound great (unless
you´re using a Behringer Virtualizer). I would stay away from those early
digital reverbs. Like my tech put it, they are "ticking timebombs"...

Stephen.

Re: [yamahacs80] Re: Vangelis sounds

2006-04-07 by Tim Siefkes

It's fun to try various processing efx. My reverb is a very modest
Alesis QuadraVerb, which has some nice sounds, but is a little noisy on
some of them. I can get away with it in live performance mixes, but
would not be clean enough for serious studio usage. I had fun one time
playing my old Fender Rhodes through our guitar player's Marshall amp.
Even the tame Rhodes piano sounded just like E. VanHalen when played
through a Marshall. Wierd.

we also should include the bass line of "Billy Jean"from MJs thriller
album and the Gun Shot that killed J.R. as CS80 offspring.......I "by
the way"immediatly recognized the CS80 when I heard it on Kate Bushes
and Stevies Stuff......It was Stevies favorite because of its
expressiveness with the poly AT.....he gained higher ground with the
clav sound....and the initial pitch bend on Bushes stuff screamed 80....

About the gun shot on Dallas: I never heard or saw that show, but I read about Clark Spangler being the sound designer for that show, or that particular episode. Can someone do a wav file of that from the new Dallas DVDs coming out?

we also should include the bass line of "Billy Jean"from MJs thriller
album and the Gun Shot that killed J.R. as CS80 offspring.......I "by
the way"immediatly recognized the CS80 when I heard it on Kate Bushes
and Stevies Stuff......It was Stevies favorite because of its
expressiveness with the poly AT.....he gained higher ground with the
clav sound....and the initial pitch bend on Bushes stuff screamed 80....
