CS-80

2005-12-21 by Scott Metzger

Ok.. So I just picked up a CS-80.

I have a few other synths as well

Moog Voyager
Andromeda A6
Nord Lead 3
Micro Korg
Jupiter 8.

I have to say that the CS-80 is the best synth ever created.
Adjusting any attribute is cake, it has amazing control, and it is
layed out smart and intutivly. I can now see why some of you guys buy
up more than one of these. If I could get midi installed on my cs-80,
my life would be complete. Why isn't Yamaha rereleasing this synth,
in the same steps of moog with the minimoog? Don't keyboard makers
realize that soft synths are just a fad that will die quick? Arturia
soft synths all seem to have the same sound engine, and sound the
same. There is no way in hell you can tell me the Software version of
the Arturia CS-80 sounds just like a Real CS-80. I compared them, and
the Software version is way to clean, and too sharp. It doesn't have
the inperfections of a Real CS-80. Are there 2 CS-80's that sound 100
percent identical? If you tell me that the Arturia CS-80 sounds exact
to your hardware CS-80, then you really need to invest in some decent
studio monitors, and dump those Radio Shack computer speakers you are
using to monitor your sound.

When I was first getting into synths I loved the soft synths, but when
I tried the hardware version, there was no turning back. For one, a
CS-80 with 16 voices running on winXP with a 3.2 ghz machine would
make my cubase setup crawl. All of the native instrument soft synths
sound the same.. Even the effects from the software Guitar Rig sound
like something out of Reaktor.

I am sure some agree with me, and perhaps some disagree. I just
wanted to rant a little over this amazing instrument that should be in
history books. I don't think the CS-80 gets enough attention that it
really deserves.

Oh it does by anyone that knows anything about synths. The CS-80 is one of the most highly regarded. I'm wondering why anyone would think otherwise. I seem to remember seeing a post on VSE about this but haven't checked it out yet. Might need to set some people straight. : ) Congrats! I have a CS60 and would love a CS80 one of these days...

Right Matrix. I put the CSs in a different category than the synthesizers, that's because their expressiveness and their ability to sound human aka not perfect make them able to fit everywhere, so I fully quote Hans Zimmer when he says that te CS80 was the only electronic instrument able to sit into an acoustic setup...

Interesting point that I can definitely agree with. When I first got my CS60, my thought was, "this is it?" I then realized it wasn't a synth in the traditional sense. I learned how to play it and I was floored. It still kind of trips me out to this day. It's like a violin; you can't just pick it up and play it without learning a bit of technique. It's like a classic acoustic intrument and that is definitely part of it's magic.
