I'm tuned!

I'm tuned!

2005-11-28 by David Rogoff

Hi all.

It's been a while since I gave a status on my repair/restoration. My
CS-80 is now 100% working!

I just tuned it this evening. I don't know why people think it's such
a huge deal. Admittedly, mine was pretty close to start with, but the
main tuning procedure (Tuning from
http://personal.inet.fi/private/matador/cs-80_adjustment_procedure.html)
only took about an hour. It's so in tune it almost sounds digital :^)

I also did the power-supply adjustments. One thing I did, that I had
read somewhere, was put a heater in the room and cranked up the
temperature to about 85F. This is supposed to make the ambient
temperature around the voice cards closer to what it would be with the
instrument all closed up. The tuning has always been good and solid
on this unit. It's serial # 1646, which is one of the highest ones
I've ever seen. It has the last version of the VCO chips, which
didn't require any temperature compensation mods.

While it's opened up, I'll go through all the other adjustment
procedures. I've already tweaked all the switch contacts to get the
note on/off and velocity sensing even. I even took out all the keys
and cleaned the key tops. All aftertouch sensors are working great, too.

Oh, and after searching for months, I bought an original CS-80 stand
from a guy whose CS-80 wasn't working. Now if I could just find the
Plexiglass music rest. My attempt to make one didn't work out:
cutting Plexiglass (especially clear) is harder than I thought.

I hope to screw the case shut, for the last time, within a week
(unless I find a Kenton kit really cheap!).

I'll post some more pictures soon, too.

Thanks for all the help I've gotten from many people in this group!

David

Hi David,

thanks for these comprehensive insights. Wouldn´t it be possible to upload
all these somewhere or compiling these in printed/CDR form? My tech is very
reluctant about touching my 80, and this might help him a good deal and make
him a lot more courageous...

Stephen.

The info on the web is very good. Just look at Crow's www.cs80.com,
especially "CS80 Adjustment Proceedure". The link "From the Inside"
shows how to open it up. If you're just doing the basic tuning, all
you need do it lift the panel, lift the card cage, and hook up a tuner
to one of the audio outputs. All the M-card trimmers are accessible
from the front edge of the boards.

As far as knowing which voice is active, I build a little LED board,
which I talked about a few months ago. Pictures and schematic are in
Photos->CS80 Renovation->Lights. It made the tuning a snap. By the
way, I will probably be selling my little LED board very soon. If
you're interested, make me a reasonable offer.

Hello David

Thank you very much for your quick answer.
I wanted to know which pcb (KAS, TKC, TSB1, eg.) you choosed to start with?
Did you also overhaul the power supply and if which parts besides the cap.
did you changed.

Greetings
Thorsten

Re: [yamahacs80] I'm tuned!

David/Thorsten-
Before Old Crow stopped answering my calls/e-mails....
his review of my Cs-80 was that I needed to replace all 4 chips.
I would guess that they the CMOS chips that David
just referenced... Correct?
Funny I think Thorsten you and I bought our CS-80
around the same time and I also apologize for
having a hard time copying the manual for you again.
The problem is that the technical part and diagrams
didn't come in a binder...they came in architechtural type
drawings...(Or at least mine did)..huge oversized paper.
So I would like to Thorsten ...in the spirit of things...
overnight you the whole thing as I "I have".
You are closer to attacking the repair and upgrade issues
and you need it more than I....
You bought your CS-80 from DJ Lethal right?
You were so gracious to me...
I paid Old Crow something of a downpayment to fix my CS-80 with a
gentlemens agreement and he left me pretty much "out there"...(Its been 6 months!)
So....what do I do...."I got stood up" .I want KSR to repair it now anways !!!!
now if only I can pay him in David Beckham silver medalions....(laughs!)...
Please let me know....if what I have Thorsten you can use....
Regards, JD

I don't remember what order I did the boards in. I did, however, do one
board at a time and made sure it was still working before I did the next
board. I did have a couple of solder bridges that took some time to
find, and generated really weird symptoms. You need to have a decent
multi-meter and simple oscilloscope, the schematics (mostly available
online - see Links), and an understanding of some digital and analog
electronics, because something will go wrong when removing/replacing
over a hundred 14 and 16 pin chips!

There's tons of detailed pictures I put on the site (Photos > CS80
renovation) as I did the work. The only thing on the power supply was
replacing all the caps (other than calibrating it). All 4000-series
CMOS chips were removed, sockets soldered in, bypass caps added, and new
chips put in. I also added larger caps for each board. I basically
followed Crow's website. The biggest help was buying a used
de-soldering station. It would have been crazy to try it with just a
spring-loaded solder remover. When I was done, I sold it (to the owner
of the Yahoo oldsynths group).

4 CMOS chips? There's a lot more than that. Maybe, based on your
symptoms, Crow thought there were only 4 bad ones.

can you explain where the bypass caps go? Is it between the power in
VccIN on the chip and ps?
Also what about existing capacitors? which should be replaced while I
am there?

Thanks

Re: [yamahacs80] I'm tuned!

2005-12-03 by Thorsten Pörschke

Hello David

what do you think of using sockets with alread installed decup. cap?
I'm not sure because I remind old crow mentioned that the drilled holes on
the pcb are not so accurate and you have to break/cut sockets from time to
time that they will fit in the holes.

Hello David

sorry I forgot, do you have a part list for you CS-80 project?
I already got the list from old crow's web site but maybe you have also one
where I can benefit from.

Regards
Thorsten

Re: [yamahacs80] General overhaul notes (was: I'm Tuned!)

2005-12-03 by The Old Crow

Between Vdd (+8.5V) and Vss (-6.5V) of each IC. I use Mil-Max
"capped" sockets for this. They are a little difficult to seat into the
board as the hole spacing is a little wider than 300 mils, but it can be
done--I do it all the time. :)

Existing caps may as well be replaced. Especially electrolytics. I
tend to replace the old "main" filter capacitors in the power supply.
The old ones are cemented to the board, but the adhesive can be cut with
an Xacto blade. New ones with the correct lead spacing are hard to find
for the larger cap pair, so I use whatever I can find as a closest fit
then anchor them to the board using cemedine (the same stuff Yamaha
used, it is a common non-conductive type of model cement).

Re: [yamahacs80] I'm tuned!

2005-12-03 by The Old Crow

In general practice, I have not needed to split sockets apart to fit
the hole spacing. Pressing turned-pin sockets into the slightly wider
spacing becaomes an acquired habit. Difficult at first, but it gets
easier as one becomes more familiar with the procedure.

One note: make sure the holes are "open" and not partially clogged
with old solder. Clogged holes can result in breaking pads off the
board when pushing the socket into place.

Someone asked for a board overhaul order. I tend to favor this one:
TKC, KAS, SH, TSB1, TSB2. I like to get the board with the most parts
to replace out of the way first.

I'd scan it if someone would answer my question about how to remove
the panel! I can try taking a photo.

Also, someone had mentioned that I should name my CS-80. Well, the
serial number is 1646, so I googled that and found out it's the year
Gottfried Leibnitz was born, so my CS-80 is now named Gottfried.

I've made several attempts here top photograph the hatch lid, but I just
can't seem to get the lighting right. With or without the camera flash,
I keep getting totally unacceptable glare off of the lid. This is going
to require some carefully planned indirect lighting which is still
bright enough to get a good photo. I've tried... it's just harder than I
expected!

If I remember I have a picture of it on the CS-80V manual, I'll post ASAIC ;-)

I really am not sure how it comes off......My first Cs 80 had the hatch
but due to a pop spill by an overactive drummer.....combined with a good
insurance agent.... I received a new Cs80 from a store that was
unfortunately hatchless..... and my insurance company kept the old
one......( it sure gets dusty in there without it, especially on the
road)......I believe there are two u shaped channels that the lid would
slide out along however I'm not sure if the lid needs to be up
fractionally to slide , or up the entire way..... force should not be a
requirement.... let me confirm what is left in mine............

panel block diagram - Re: I'm tuned!

2005-12-11 by David Rogoff

Ok, I did it! First, to remove the memory cover you have to open the
lid (3 big screws) and them remove the whole memory assembly form the
panel (6 little screws). Then you remove the block that hold the
hinge pin from either side (2 little screws).

I uploaded a scan of the cover in to the Photos page.
