Hi / group activity

2015-10-30 by david@...

Hi all.

I know the group has been pretty sleepy lately. I'm not worried since everyone is busy and activity always waxes and wanes. I hope to be posting a lot soon. I've had a rough last few months; I've been out of work and just got a new job and my wife, who was pretty healthy her whole life, had a heart attack out of nowhere! She's much better now and things are recovering around here so I should be able to start working on the CS80 mods I was in the middle of.

I have an issue with my CS80.... I did a upgrade to the newer VCO chips about 20 years ago... and ordered 2 M boards from overseas with what I believe is the original Chips.... I remember having to move a diode (or add one )right beside the chip.... my problem is, during spring, I realized osc 1 bank one was down... Filter still showed up with white noise and Eg worked but no Sine or Saw or Pulse was audible....

well the idiot I am, installed one of the other M board osc Chips in Backwards ( I know right? ) FFS.... any Idea what I may have damaged in the process? if I try the replacement chip in the correct way, it interferes with Bank 2 (same osc)... leaving it empty allos osc 1 bank 2 to work.... and worst, Im in Winnipeg Canada..... probably the only local CS80 here.... (rumours there was another... )

Any Wise sugestions ?

Hi to Laurie laurie,
I have a way to check voice cards , as well as the propietary chips without allowing excess current to pass through anything. It's just an idea, but if you wanted to send a card to check , that's a possibility. I'm in LA, and am the guy currently running the unison mod for diy'ers you might have seen. If nothing is truly damaged, or if you want, I can also repair whatever is wrong, using your spare parts if you prefer. Anyway, without me doing that, you probably don't want to continue slapping parts in the card until you know more about the failure. Have you done the usual sensory checks, i.e. test for hot parts, smell, etc ? Nothing visually obvious or fatigued ?RegardsTim

My guess would be you killed the IG00153 VCO chip. Try swapping it to another voice to confirm. I have the chip in stock if you need another one.

Since you say it affects the other banks voice, that is NOT a recommended, safe method. You risk doing some degree of damage. Granted, you could get lucky, but..... blind chip swapping isn't the scientific method.

would your vco chip be the more stable version or the original? I had to add a diode for the newer IG00153 vco chips when I upgraded all 16 m boards... can the older be dropped in (I have 2 spare cards) or do I have to remove the extra components?

I did the sensory checks, lol , no unusual smells, nothing hot compared to adjacent boards no visible broken or burned traces , mad about my gaff with the one chip from my spare cards though, and I still think reverse engineering to go from the stable chip to original may be required...

that's good... then I 'd first do a swap from another voice of your synth, since you already have confirmation of those that still work. Then, you'll know if buying another chip will for sure fix it.

I have the rank "11" chips that were the most stable/least amount of tuning drift. I can include the diode if you like...

This might be problematic. I recently picked up a parcel at the customs
with IG00151s from Doug. The officer asked me to open the parcel and
wanted to see the content. He took a look at the chips, and his only
question (with a smile) was: "For a monophonic or a polyphonic CS?" He
knew the real prices without having a look at the bill....

Ok, that is custom Munich, not 20. Arrondissement. ;-)

Hi , I am pretty sure that was my next move after my backwards fail.... swapping from 2 to one, and it did not work in mboard 1 but did when returned to 2... I may have taken out some other component because traces look ok...
