CS-60 ribbon controller fail

CS-60 ribbon controller fail

2014-02-04 by <8bit9bot@...>

this is a cross post from vintage synth - someone recommended i post the same question here so... here we go:

my cs-60 is in pretty good condition but there's an indentation in the ribbon controller - this means you cannot "press any position as a starting point" - the only starting point on the ribbon controller is where the indentation is - i noticed the lid for the cs-60 has a support that holds the lid away from the controls - the support rests right on top of the ribbon controller in the indented spot! is this a design flaw? did someone put this particular lid together wrong? should i only use the lid during transport? remove the support? does the cs-80 lid have this issue too?

also... how hard is it to fix the ribbon controller in this state?

here's a picture of my CS-60 lid... the "support" is that rectangular thing in the middle... it has a little piece of felt on it where it makes contact w/ the CS-60 front panel... specifically, for some odd reason, on the ribbon controller: http://alexmauer.com/temp/cs60lid.jpg

I dont believe that would be a place to put a support rod.... and if it were a support block, lets say to strengthen the lid for travel,  I would suspect it is to touch between the ribbon and preset buttons, but again does not exist on any CS80

ah... i was wrong... i put my iphone with the camera on inside the lid while closing it... the support is not directly on top of the ribbon but rather between the ribbon and keys... the ribbon must be damaged from something else

how hard is it to fix a ribbon?

I don't know, I have never had to replace a ribbon.... I hear some guys have done it... there may be a replacement spring or something that you have to re affix under the felt... some one should speak up about where you can get remedy.... look in earlier threads.... its not the first time ribbons were discussed

If you search the message history, you’ll see a few threads about replacing the ribbon (actually a coil - like a very thin Slinky).  Kent Spong was selling these but I don’t know if he still has any available.
