Thanks,

Hi Doug.

Thanks. Don't think I'll be needing any M cards, but I should be placing an
order for various chips for CS series soon.
Also... Don't suppose you have a ribbon control (just the ribbon) for a
CS80? We may be able to get our hands on one, but always good to have a
backup plan ;-)

Having a bit of a run on CS renovations at the mo... 2 x CS60, 1 x CS50,
and 1 x CS80. Will be in touch soon.

Cheers

Bob

Hi Bob,

If you come across more than one ribbon and are willing to share your source it would be much appreciated as I am looking for one.

I made an enquiry last week to get the spring re-fabricated - an exact copy of the original, gold-plated etc. So if you have no luck finding a replacement I would be willing to get a batch made up.

Re: FS: Complete Working M Voice Cards [Ribbon Controller]

2013-05-11 by npselliott

It's been said before, but replacement springs are available from UK RLMusic. I've arranged to buy one, it's $285 US. Kinda pricey but have not found a cheaper alternative. The RL spring is not identical to the original, but RL states they installed over 100 of them going back more than seven years with no defects or problems.

If anyone else wants to buy the RL springs, would it make sense to combine and ask for a bulk discount?

Also, if there is a cheaper alternative for the original spec part I would like to hear more about it. Thanks, scott

Re: [yamahacs80] Re: FS: Complete Working M Voice Cards [Ribbon Controller]

Hi Nigel/Scott

Good to know. Thanks.

I tend to use Ebay, Synthparts, and Vintage Planet for most of my synth
parts (I repair all kinds of synths, not just Yamaha CSs)
I'll make enquiries with RL music. $285 isn't too bad for a specialist part
in opinion. Especially when it's something so vital to the character of the
instrument.

Cheers

Bob

Hi Nigel,

Please share the price with us when you get it. Maybe we could do a group buy and get a much better deal than the RL price.

best,

DT

Re: FS: Complete Working M Voice Cards

I'm still trying to ascertain if my ribbon is going to 'come good', it's semi-functioning state being my reason to look into this. I certainly wouldn't intend on taking away any business from Kent, but I was just hoping to replace my possibly busted ribbon with the exact same component, gold plating and all that good stuff.

I'll let you know how it goes, I was thinking to just get 10 or so springs and take it from there. I spoke to a manufacturer last week and it seems feasible. I'm still trying to get a price on the gold plating.

cheers,
N

I don't think it's as easy as that. From what I've heard the hard part is taking the unit apart without breaking it..!

Have a go yourself, by all means but remember - once broken you will need the complete housing as well...!!

Thanks for the word of caution, obviously I would rather source a complete replacement ribbon but failing that replacing the spring with as close to original part is our next best option.

Does Kent sell complete ribbon units?

Re: FS: Complete Working M Voice Cards

I purchased one from Kent about four or five years ago when they were around 100 bucks each. So, he already got my business :)

It seemed to be of good quality, but I think I botched the install (I barely know what I'm doing). It still doesn't quite work right. I would love to get another, at a good price...

I should have just sent him the whole ribbon, but at the time, I was too poor/cheap to pay the extra 100 bucks that would have cost.

best,

D

There's a bunch of threads about this (search messages) and I replaced a broken spring with one of Kent's a few years ago. As I wrote, it was a bit tricky figuring out how to carefully get the spring into the housing but it worked great when I was done. I thought I took pictures but can't find them :(
