Yamaha E70 Voice Cards in a CS80

Yamaha E70 Voice Cards in a CS80

2012-04-05 by dzlvs8

I have a Yamaha CS50 and a just got a Yamaha E70 Electone organ. I know that the E70 has the same PASS architecture as the CS50/CS80. So does that mean that I could swap out a voice card in my CS50 with a voice card in the CS80??????

I assume not because they connecting wires are different. But if anyone know, it would be helpful. One of my CS50 voice cards has something wrong with it and I cant get notes in tune throughout the entire range of tones (yes I know how to calibrate it).

I don't think the voice cards are the same at all. I think they use a
similar topology but very different components and connections. For
instance, I believe the oscillators are DCO, not VCO. I could be wrong.
But I'm pretty sure it's not 1:1. I know for certain they use different
chips, as I've seen an old Yamaha pinout book for their custom chips and
the ones in the CS are different than those in the organs.

Hmmm, I wish I didn't have a pesky B2 blocking my E70 up against a wall so I could see. I think you may be right about DCO. The E70 stays in tune so well while my CS50 is the worst synth I have ever seen (for warm up time and stability).

I am getting the E70 to CS80 mod manual from Marc as soon as I send him an email. I'm not going to modify the E70. I'm just curious. I will see if the mod instructions hint at anything. From all the E70 to CS80 conversion info I have been reading people make it sound like its very similar.

But it wouldn't make that much sense that there is an E70 for $600 near me at a pawn shop and on Clist (Hint:an hour west of you Jim) and it hasn't sold and I picked up an E70 in mint condition of craiglsit a few weeks ago...and it was on Craigslist for weeks before I got it. The talk that I've read online says there are somewhere are 21 voice cards in an E70???

They are not the same at all. E70 is digital tone generators and
analog filters. --Crow

The E70 is LOADED with Yamaha CS series VCAs. It's got like 16 of them or something (or maybe there was just an 800 dollar bill in there...). Not to mention the selector buttons, which I think are the same as on the CS-80... but I don't know for sure.

The E30 has quite a deal less of the VCAs and something like 6-8 VCFs.

The E50 has a number of VCAs... maybe 8?

Some of the more modern late 70s early 80s spaceship looking versions of the E70 have the VCF as well. Those EX models... not sure of the model numbers.

I don't think any other CS specific chips are in there... and certainly not the voice cards, but it may be the case that there is some stuff that is useful in the digital boards as well...

In my opinion, we should be killing these organs... not amazing CS-50s to fix our CS synths!!! I shed a tear every time I see a working CS-60 or CS-50 ripped apart for profit. Not that I haven't bought some of the parts (oops..).

I should clarify: when I say VCA and VCF, I mean Yamaha IG00151 VCA and Yamaha IG00156 VCF, as used in the CS series.

All of the organs I mentioned earlier have these CS-relevant VCA ICs, and the E30 has the CS-series VCF as well, but there is nothing else of use (Yamaha IC-wise) on the voice cards. Again, there might be something else in the digital card racks in the organs, but I never looked.

I should also mention that, as I recall, the VCFs in the E70 and E50 do not have the same number (IG00156) as the CS series, but for all I know, they might be similar to the IG00156 despite that. I don't think this is the case though...

best,

DT

Re: [yamahacs80] Re: Yamaha E70 Voice Cards in a CS80

I have one voice card in my cs50 that the VCR chip may be bad in it. It has to be calibrated completely differently for the filter sweep to sound anywhere near the same and still it isn't perfect. If anyone grabs a E70 and kills it, let me know what VCF chips are in it (if the filters are analog). I may need one.

I've only killed two keyboards in my life. Both I had no choice (too far gone IMO) and one of em was a cs50. I still have the case and power supply and nobody wants to buy it but I REFUSE to just throw any part of it away. I even have a bag with all the screws from the synthesizer in it. FYI, no I have nothing else left from it.

VCF not VCR, sorry. Auto correct. My auto correct dictionary has many many keyboard related words in it and STILL everyday I find a new word that is related to my hobby that prevents me from using auto correct accurately!
