Yamaha CS80

Hi Folks,

I'm the proud owner of a CS80. She is in lovely condition but has developed a quirk and I could use a little in fixing it. The panel 2 button is "stuck" on. The button moves freely but the presets are engaged only when held down. Any help here would be wonderful.

It sounds like either the actual contact is stuck in the ON position within the switch, one of the IG00157 ICs on the tone selector board has gone wrong or a short somewhere in the circuit for that switch. If either of the first two you'll need to source new components from somewhere, either from a broken CS-80 or one of the E-series electone organs with the same illuminated preset switches. I believe they also use the same preset ICs.

I'm not excited about having to source those components. Ugh...

Well, I'd rather it be stuck in the panel on position than on another preset.

This is more of a problem if I decide to sell it than if I keep it.

Hey Ian,

I have a bunch of Yamaha E70 preset panel buttons, but they are in the US (I think) and I am in Sweden. I'll be back in the summer though. If you still want them then, contact me.

I haven't had any luck finding a repair person in the San Francisco Bay Area to fix the stuck button issue on my CS80. I'd like to get this quirk fixed so I can sell the beautiful girl with a clean bill of health.

I've checked with Chris from This Old Synth, the fellow from Synthparts and analogsynthservice.com.

Any other ideas?

2 long phillips screws is all it takes to open the panel.... just look at the point where the front angle turns flat on the bottom of the CS80... one screw about an inch from each end... you will know its the right one if its 8 inches long..

What about the third one in the middle? Have you opened yours so many times you lost that one?

Middle?... hmm..... ! ... you may be right there.... I still have the middle one for my keybed but its been so long since I took a screw out of the middle for the panel....Ive been on and off the road with only the two panel screws for a couple decades....

You might be right David.... I've been on and off the Road for decades with her, and only the 2 panel screws as my memory goes.... still have the "keyboard bed" screws in the middle... :)
