5U modules

5U modules

Here is a quick recap of the VCO153 and GX1BPF:

VCO board (through hole prototype)

One difference between the prototype and production models, aside
from lots of SMD parts, is the use of a small "jack board" soldered to
the PC pigtails of the Switchcraft 112PC jacks that connects to the main
board with a short ribbon cable. This allows me to keep everything in a
ground plane and remove a lot of tedious point to point wiring at the
same time.

Those looks really great! Any estimate on price yet?

Thanks!

Excellent! One thing (of course) - one of the coolest effects on a CS
is bending chords down to dc, which is possible since the VCOs are
linear, not exponential. I hope the FM input jack will allow this.
Maybe 0 volts is freq * 1 (no mod), +5v is freq * 2 (+1 octave) and -5v
is freq * 0. This would work like the ribbon on the CS80/60.

Currently the FM input is tied through an attenuator into the
exponential CV buss to provide exponential FM. This was done to
facilitate the use of the VCO in a modular system where most of the
control voltage sources are already linear. It is simple enough to bend
the frequency down to DC. In an expo VCO linear FM is typically used
for linear detune which the secret to obtaining what Jurgen (Haible)
describes as "living VCOs." I can add a switch-selectable linear/expo
FM option easily enough, though it adds like $15 to the end price.

David,
What do you mean by bending chords down to DC?

David,

What a wonderful post! Thank you! I learned a lot and it also explained
something I discovered when playing my CS50 for the first time, which as I
have mentioned in other posts, is only working on 1 voice card right now.
But by pushing the sustain slider on the left all the way up, I can make
it act like a monosynth. So while I wait for parts, that's what I've been
doing just to get myself familiar with it. When I assigned the
sub-oscillator to pitch the first time and heard the vibrato it produced, I
was dumbfounded. My Minimoog Voyager certainly doesn't sound like that.
My dotcom modular doesn't sound like that. My Andromeda doesn't sound
like that. I didn't understand why the vibrato was so natural, almost
organic sounding. Now I know! Thanks!
