Coldplay/CS-80

2005-06-05 by james devero

Hey group-

I picked up the new Coldplay CD...and there on a prominent photo towards
the back...is a performance photo with Chris Martin playing his CS-80.
I have not really run the whole CD....but the very first sounds you hear
contain the CS80...they are not overbearing mind you....just a few echoes
of timbres you all will recognize...interesting...and good choice.
They also worked with Brian Eno on one of the tracks....which I am soon to
load up and listen to.
regards, JD

HI,

FYI, Coldplay bought a Cs80 from RL Music...
I spoke to Richard reasonably recently and he mentioned it to me.
Apparently they were interested in an Elka Synthex and also a Synthi AKS.
Dont know if they stumpted up the money for the AKS and Synthex, but they definately bought the Cs80.
They sound like they have good taste in terms of synths : ) LOL!
Sounds rather like a small portion of my setup ; )

Best,
Rob.

So, James, did you ever get a CS-80 then?!?

It's fairly well known, or easy to establish, that a lot of
the main honchos of the classic analog keyboard era (Tony Banks,
Rick Wakeman, you name them) are decidedly NOT nostalgic for the
vintage keys of yore.

I suppose that's reasonably understandable, but I'm surprised that
the overall community of filthy rich music makers doesn't absolutely
corner the market on the most valuable and rare of vintage keys.
TRANSLATION: Some bloke is trying to sell a GX-1 in Australia.
Apparently wants silly money, don't really know just what. But if
I was worth millions upon millions, I'd pay... hate to say it, but
something on the order of $1M doesn't seem unreasonable given the
rarity and coolness of a GX-1. Think about rare vintage cars as
a comparison (which aren't as fast and comfortable as current cars,
etc.). Yet I think an auction in Europe for a GX-1 went to $37k,
and Mark Glinsky told me that Hans Zimmer sold his GX-1 for less
than $25k.

So, yes, Coldplay should have every G0dd@mn super valuable and rare
vintage keyboard under the sun.

DSCR22-Hey...........
Sorry for the delay...but Yes I bought one....3 grand.
Being shipped and is to arrive Mon/Tuesday.
Will be an absolute blast......My honesty is that this will be great....I am really
having a challenging time with Pro Tools, a new Mac...finding a contoller
that is good for piano players and not mushy action...etc/etc....
I got drunk Saturday and sat at my piano and sang some great standard
ballads...and sort of reminded myself what the heck I'm doing in music!!
The reason I got the CS80 is that I can layer it with some music that I sing/write
you all might call "Pop-Opera".(Groban/Bolcelli/etc..)So whereas Coldplay... uses it
as a part of their landscape of sound....mostly layers and overtones...
I will be looking to find just the right timbres to accompany a vocal melody line.
I found some beautiful resonance in the 80V...and so wanted to buy an original.
Its funny because most of the synth sounds I've been using are from my old Korg
T1....and the not so subtle joke on me...is that once I have the Cs80...along with
the Yamaha PF and TheKorg T1.....OMG...these babies are all so ridiculously heavy!
It will be real interesting to take these out/etc......But thanks.....I will be certain to
ask for advice as things unfold.
Kind regards, JD

Hey group....
Well good news bad news guys here....
My CS-80 keyboard came today warmed up for a couple of hours....
and sounded quite sick...not the good "sick" mind you...for you urbanites
but more like the "holy crap"...sounds awful....sick.
So.now I'm thinking ...for 3 grand I could have visited everyones friend Max
in France and we could have hit Monte Carlo on one of those high roller weekender
passes...cruised for chicks that don't mind Americans/etc...
But alas....Here I am.
So Any one who can give me some immeadiate help in this regard...I will send a
personally signed 8 X 10 glossy of my bun...and not even ship COD..
I actually will pay for the postage.!!
So okay trying to lighten up my mood here....I'm obviously disappointed.
Nothing ventured nothing gained...and yet...if someone can be so kind as to offer me a
link for tuning it at least...than  I can at least get a read on whats functioning and what isn't... and go from there..I would sincerely  appreciateI .
And No bun photo's I promise!!!
My regards, J D

Hey James,
don't get forlorn and negative on us now, the trip to Monte Carlo wouldn't compare with the riches that await you once you get the old dinosaur singing again.

Check out OldCrow's site at http://www.cs80.com/cautionary.html  There he offers tuning advice. My ears are really picky and it takes me a good four hours to do the tune up. It lasts for quite a good while. I think it's been over 4 years since I tuned it and it's just now reaching that point where the notes are sounding a little rank. I must add here it's been kept in one place for that time period, and moved very little in one mixing room of a studio.

Can you give us any audio samples that illustrate its "holy crap"tivity? I'd rather have that than a bun photo.

Effects can mask some of the out of tune-ness.

Best of luck to you.
Tommy
