VCF-EG problem on CS-60

VCF-EG problem on CS-60

2010-12-01 by Max Fazio

Hi people
I'd need some help to solve a problem: a friend of mine has recently acquired a CS-60 in fair good conditions and we're involved with the tuning and calibration process: suddendly we realized that the VCF-EG in voice #7 doesn't work, it seems like the VCF envelope doesn't get the trigger , while the VCA-EG works good.
What controls should we do before surrender and look for a working iG00152?
Thnaks for any suggestion!
Max

Max, using a 'scope, look for a waveform on it's output pin(3) - if there is an output then it could be the associated buffer (IG00151) chip. In my case a while ago it was the 152, if you find any please let me know where you got it - I could do with a spare...;c)

Cheers,
TOM

Thx Tom, we must do a thorough check: I suggested to look at "TR" point to check out wheter the trigger voltage gets in or not.

I uploaded an example here
http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/YMX2TNMy5zBttEZFOSUnTjJv3TlEQQufv024yFmL23UWRuXA84kn5mUBLhkbcym_hbibgfMsr6hGKD8lDDvkaFHlUn-x6qsFZmU/VCF%20pb.mp3

1st hit: good voice card w/o envelope action

2nd hit: voice #7 w/o envelope action

3rd hit: good voice with full IL and AL

4th hit: voice #7 with full IL AL , VCA envelope with medium release.

As you may hear it definitely looks like that the envelope isn't triggere but rightfully it may be even the buffer....btw are you missing a 152 too?

If you're lucky, it'll be the 151. Easier to get I would have thought.

Mine was the 152 - which I replaced, but would like another as a 'spare'... peace of mind etc... you know the feeling...;c)

By the way, your link don't seem to work.

Good luck and let us know what you find.
Cheers,

hey max... check the pots on the back edge of the m card.... the top two are hpf the next 2 are lpf ... and the next 3 are envelope for vcf, i believe 1 is attack time 1 is decay and the other is threshold/ level amount... if that threshold amount is too high, it bypasses the trigger of the vcf envelope....... the pots below that pertain to vca env and etc....

Many thanks, Laurie and Tom, I forwarded the hint about VR18 (isn't it, Laurie? I mean that should be the threshold); let's keep fingers crossed...

Re: VCF-EG problem on CS-60

This has reminded me of the one time (a couple of years ago) I tried calibrating the 'M' boards as per the service manual, and finding that everything went well - until I got to this exact part!... VCF - the VR15, VR19 and VR18 section. (Infact VR18, in my manual, is marked on the circuit diagram as 'VR8', just to confuse matters!!)

Anyway, there was no way I was geting anything like the waveforms shown in the 'specifications' column on the chart for this part - "Attack Time" and "Sustain Level"

Maybe I was wrong expecting to see that envelope drawn there on my oscilloscope? Confused me though!

Either way - reading those charts, specifically in the 'How To Adjust' column... it isn't really well written and not too clear as to what you are required to do or are looking for. I was wondering if anyone here 'in the know' could maybe re-write those instructions for us?

Good Luck with your adjustments Max - let us know how you get on.

Cheers,
TOM

Re: [yamahacs80] Re: VCF-EG problem on CS-60

Hi people
Unfortunately it is not the trimmer, so there's no clipping, the waveform doesn't come out, I must check the buffer VCA, and praying it would NOT be the 152.... :-(

Meanwhile , a question: I've noticed a cutoff at 12KHz which very likely comes out of the filter in the EXP board; this cut stays quietly there even if I increase the volume through the pedal; now should I assume that the filter at EXP section is a lo-shelf enhancing anything below 12KHz and cutting everything beyond that frequency?

Any hint on that?

M

The seller says it all came from a perfectly working CS60. Seems like such a shame to destroy it like that.
