At 8k there are many pitfalls. As much as I love the CS80, I´d not spend that much on this synth unless I have twice that amount in my wallet to buy spares and pay a tech to install these in case something breaks.

First of all Hi to everyone! My first message to the group. My name's Matt and I've been a synth player for years, just embarking on a new recording project.

I've been offered a CS80 for £8k. It would be about 4 times more money than any other bit of musical kit I've ever bought, just to put in perspective! I've wanted a CS80 for years and am now wishing I'd taken out a loan 5 years ago and picked one up for a quarter the price! Only now do I have that kind of money available...

My main reason for posting here is to ask what pitfalls to consider when buying one of these? Are there any components in there that you just can't get any more?

What I don't want is a giant 8 grand oversized paperweight! :) cos I'm not buying it to look at, I want to play it, probably quite a lot!

What it boils down to is really - should these things be left to wealthy collectors now, or is it a viable instrument for years to come? It will reside permanently in my studio should I end up buying it.

Also, with regards to price, what are they worth? - I'll listen to all angles on this...

Cheers!

Matt.

That's kind of what I'm worried about. I know it's had some kind of work from KSR but I suppose that's no guarantee it's not going to break tomorrow.

If it had been £3-4k then I'd have snapped it up. The only thing that's making me consider it is that they'll just keep going up in price I expect... although I can't believe they're this much already.

given its sonic limitations and that it is
very old technology, i really think that
price will peak eventually. i personally
would never spend that amount of money
on an old synthesizer with custom chips.
of course, there is the rarity
factor of a collectible item, but it remains
an instrument with high technology content
and custom parts unlike old guitars or paintings
you'll never have trouble with...

if you are sure it will be amortized in, say, one year,
you could give it a try for the pleasure of owning it
but it is most likely not going to be a great investment.

I think the trick here is to buy two (or more) and stock up on parts when/where ever possible.

I count myself lucky in that I paid £250 and £1300 for my CS80's and £1000 for my latest addition - CS70M

Try to keep them running and look upon them as instruments rather than investments!

Its short term...playability
and long term investment.
There are complete CS80 geniuses on board that will
help realize the short term goal with some further investment.
And long term...they are getting more rare...just hang
in there and you will get your money back and then some.

Its the sonic limitations and the technological rarity....like a guitar , which will keep
its value......
The CS80 is more than old electronics and Technology, my friend.........Its a genius of an
instrument with an unmatched intuitiveness which gives its life to the
performer.....there is no reward better in a synthesiser than its realtime interaction
with the player.....it establishes immediate unity with its old analogue circuitry, and
breathes instant life into any mix.......

I second that. 8K£ is as much, if not more, than the highest-priced CS80 I have ever seen *actually* sell on eBay. (I believe one went for $15,000 US in early 2008.) So from an investment standpoint, you would be wise to hold out for a better price. For what it's worth, I got mine in late 2008 for $4500 US and I'm confident there are still similar deals to be had if you're patient (and a maybe little bit lucky.)

As for the short-term, I have played mine extensively over the past 1.5 years and I have tuned it twice over that span of time. It has a few minor quirks and could definitely use a proper overhaul one of these days, but it is otherwise holding up very well. Of course, "buying low" makes repair/maintenance costs much easier to justify as well, which is another reason I would suggest you take a pass on this one.

Every time I play a new digital synth it leaves me cold, I need to buy a new instrument but can't find anything I like out there...

Thanks for all the replies. I agree that it's probably too much, even if I got it down to £6k I'd still be uncomfortable with that...

...

Still tempted though!!!

No one knows what the Market will be like. It all depends on the supply and demand. It might go down in price, but then it might not. I don't think it will go down because as years go by, less and less will be fully functional meaning fewer out there. You can always cannibalize CS50's and CS60's for parts.

I paid just a tiny bit under that for my CS-80 about 1 year ago; and it took years to find one even available.....

But ten years ago $1000 at an estate sale when I was piss ass broke and helpless. My opinion... if you really want one, managed to find one and have the money.... then get it. They are not making any more of these.

But each individual's life has priorities before luxury items. So keep those ideals in check. That's my advice to you. Life and family first. Toys later. You could buy that CS-80 and keep the old car running another 10 years before trading it in (if the car is paid for).

For me... now repairing my CS-80. These are tired machines and some of them need much TLC. But will easily outlive you and I once properly restored.

>
